A：萬古焼は、三重県四日市市と菰野町が産地です。100社を超える萬古焼の窯元と問屋があります。萬古焼の始まりは、江戸時代中期と言われており、その歴史は桑名の豪商として知られる「沼波弄山（ぬなみろうざん）」が窯を開いたことで始まりました。萬古焼には細かくさまざまな名称が存在しますが、なかでも「四日市萬古焼」は、1979年に国の伝統工芸品に指定されるとともに特に知られています。

Q : What is Banko yaki?
A : Banko yaki is produced in Yokkaichi City and Komono Town, Mie Prefecture. There are more than 100 Banko yaki potteries and wholesalers. Banko ware is said to have started in the middle of the Edo period, and its history began with the opening of a kiln by a wealthy merchant in Kuwana, "Nunamirozan." Banko yaki has various names, but among them, Yokkaichi Banko yaki is particularly well-known since it was designated as a national traditional craft in 1979.

Q : What is Iroku?
A : "Iroku", which has inherited the tradition for four generations, started making pottery in Banko in the middle of the Meiji period. The first generation used new molding techniques to create teapots and tea utensils with paintings and openwork. The second generation pursued a unique teapot and created techniques such as "Chigire Sensuji" and "Diamond Cut" to bring out the presence of clay. The third generation has evolved the diamond-cut to minute detail and produced a teapot with a very small diamond-cut engraving. The fourth generation has inherited the tradition and is active as a representative traditional craftsman of Yokkaichi Banko ware.
